Anyone have any info on 'fabtic disticts' in either Florence or Rome? (ie, like the big one up by Sacre Cour in Paris where there blocks & blocks of fabric & tapesty stores?)

Do a google search for 'Rome fabric district' and the same for Florence.
I found this report: Rome. We visited the fabric district in the 'jewish ghetto' not far from Piazza Navonna and Campo de Fiori (near Largho di Torre Argentina). Everything was closed. No, not because it was the sabbath but because we arrived at lunchtime.
I speak Italian but the lone store open was intimidating to me. All of the fabrics, mostly silks, were stored on moveable, elevated racks.
You had to ask to view the fabrics - no browsing - no time given to ponder your choice - you have to think quick on your feet and make a decision.
At least this report gives the location in Rome.
Just to comment on Carl's post, the jewish ghetto isn't very large, so there are only a handful of fabric stores, nothing like what you are describing in Paris. (But the Jewish Ghetto is worth seeing and having lunch or dinner there too.)
