Florence: Restaurant Suggestions

Hi,

I'm looking for authentic Tuscan (non-touristy) restaurant suggestions in Florence that are walkable (safe areas) from the train station. 20-25 minutes is okay.

Thanks,
Amy

I would recommend Trattoria Pandemonio :http://www.trattoriapandemonio.it/index.html. It is a family owned restaurant in the OltraArno. They serve traditional Florentine food with a modern twist. We went there for my friend’s 60th birthday. The service was friendly and they even sang Happy Birthday with a special Tuscan treat.

If you go, you must try the sformatino di melanzane: an eggplant flan with pecorino cheese appetizer and of course the Florentine steak. One of the dishes that I tried in Tuscany was the ribollita (a minestrone bread soup), my niece and I both had a bowl. It is filling and excellent. I would recommend that you share, but she and I liked it so much we both needed our own bowl. They also have excellent pastas and a surprisingly good Risotto, I had the Scampi Risotto. It was so good that my niece ate my leftovers for breakfast the next morning and before that Risotto, she didn’t even like Risotto.

There are so many great restaurants in Florence, just wanted to share one that created such a memorable experience for my family and friends.

Have a great trip,
Sandy

Trattoria Il Sostanza is wonderful--a small restaurant that has been run by the same family for many years. Reservations are essential. It is located near Santa Maria Novella station and the Arno.

Many of the restaurants in the website I gave you above have similar ratings (between 35 and 55). I’ve not tried all, but many, and all of them will not disappoint. Pandemonio and Sostanza are also in that list.
Any restaurant saying “Toscana” (Tuscan) or “Italiana” (Italian) will have typical dishes from the area. Be aware that also non Italian restaurants (Chinese, Indian, Japanese. Etc.) are also listed.

Butter Chicken, I hear you calling! Great choice! :)

Some others you may want to consider:

  • Trattoria Diladdarno - start with their 'cutting board' and let the evening go from there
  • Al Tranvai - small, really small place but fantastic dishes (rec starting w/ 'zucchini flowers')
  • Cibreo - everything they prepare is wonderful, can't go wrong

Trattoria Sergio Gozzi (or might be under da Sergio). No reservations so you wait in line until a table opens up. If it's 12-1 and the line is a little long, it's across from San Lorenzo with the Michaelangelo-carved Medici tombs to kill time. Casual but really good food.
