Florence rental car return to Borgo Ognissanti

I read the following return instructions several times

https://community.ricksteves.com/travel-forum/italy/florence-car-rental-zlt-zone

The return path from P.za Taddeo Gadd to the rental return would take Ponte Amerigo Vespucci and continue via di Melegnano before turning left on Borgo Ognissanti.

However, the ZTL map in

https://www.accessibilitacentristorici.it/ufficiali/mappe/firenze_all_a_-_planimetria_ztl_201906.pdf

or

https://www.accessibilitacentristorici.it/ztl/toscana/firenze/mappa

showed that the entire Borgo Ognissanti is within ZTL zone B. And there is a camera at intersection Ponte Amerigo Vespucci/via di Melegnano. If you check google street view, there is a ZTL sign when entering via di Melegnano

My question: To me, it is clear this rental return are inside ZTL (B). That's why I am not clear how to avoid ZTL when driving??

I am sure I am missing something. Please correct me. Thanks...

Using Google maps Directions enter from Piazza Taddeo Gaddi to Interparking Garage Europa. Both routes given by Google Maps will allow you to reach the destination without going under a ZTL camera.

The camera at the intersection of the Vespucci bridge and Via Di Melegnano is actually a few meters east of the bridge in front of the door of the consulate of Brazil, but you won’t go under the camera if you go to Via Di Melegnano. You will pass under it only if you drive along the river on Lungarno Vespucci east of the bridge.

Below is the intersection. You can see the overhead camera on the right. But you will,go to the street on the left (via di Melegnano).

I googled this topic further and found the following map:

https://www.feelflorence.it/sites/www.feelflorence.it/files/2020-07/ztl-map-v5_ENG_0.pdf

Within ZTL B, the map also showed green dotted routes ('Permitted Routes within the ZTL'). These green routes covered Borgon Ognissanti west of Via di Melegnano. Similarly, they covered the two google route options from P.za Taddeo Gadd to rental car return.

Unfortunately, even the official below did not document such permitted routes within ZTL.

As a tourist, I am not sure how we are supposed to find what ZTL covers.

It is inside the ZTL, but you are permitted to enter the ZTL to use garages or to return rental cars. If going to a parking garage would require to go under a camera, then it would be necessary for the garage to enter your license plate in the White List in the City Website. But in this case it is not necessary because the itinerary Via il Prato-Via Curtatone-Via di Melegnano-Borgo Ognissanti is one of the itineraries within the ZTL that is permitted to vehicles without ZTL permit as specified in the City Ordinance governing the ZTL and linked below at page 10 point 4 and there is no need to pass under any cameras. The itineraries permitted to vehicles without ZTL permit you will be using are those in point 4e and 4f, if you use the other itinerary suggested by Google Maps, which is the one where you have to cross the Vespucci Bridge, that itinerary is outside the ZTL until you enter on via di Melegnano (after you cross the bridge), which is permitted without authorization under point 4e.

Thanks Roberto for providing the link of this official document about special exemptions around Borgo Ognissanti area.

I have been googled so much about this topic and could not find anything talking these particular streets exempted from ZTL. Your link also confirmed the ZTL map in www.feelflorence.it and that map is even better in translating these "Ordinanza Completa" into a visual map.

Really appreciated!!

Comparing to other travel forums, those TAs would just scare you off by telling you to rent cars in Florence airport without proper explanation for the readers to decide.

We rented a car to tour the Tuscan hill towns about a month ago at this location. I had never driven in Europe before and was anxious about the Firenze ZTL, but it was much simpler than I thought.

As discussed, there is a ZTL exception for the Borgo Ognissanti rental car location, and it is no problem as long as you strictly follow the specific route out of the garage to cross the Arno at Ponte Amerigo Vespucci on your way out of town; and then on returning, cross the same bridge, continue straight, turning left at the second intersection onto Borgo Ognissanti and then turn right into the garage. We had no problem doing this return route because that’s all it is, cross the bridge and take the second left.

I ended up pleased that it was simple enough, since renting at the airport instead of the city center would have been a detour for our trip.

When picking up your car, consider arriving at the car rental office well before your pickup time. For us in early November, the agents were busy and we must have waited around 20 minutes, even though it was not the high season. You take a number and then they call it, after you sign the paperwork the garage with the car is a few steps down the street.
