We will be arriving via cruise in Livorno. If we plan to see Galleria dell ’Accademia, Duomo and Ponte Vecchio, should we plan to see them in that order? We have transport to Florence scheduled leaving the port at 9:45am. What time would you recommend for our ticket times?
In ideal road conditions, the drive takes about 90 min. Depending on where you are dropped off, it could take at least 15 minutes to walk to your first stop, which I recommend to be the Accademia. Giving a slight cushion, I'd get your timed tickets for 12:00 noon. You dont need a ticket for the Ponte Vecchio - it's just a bridge across the Arno. You also dont need a timed ticket to visit the Duomo; but you do for the dome climb, Baptistry, Bell Tower, and Museum. Visit here after the Accademia (allow an hour there and 15 minutes to walk to the Duomo). Buy your advance timed tickets taking that into account. If you want lunch, take that into account too, before starting your Duomo visit. Leave the Ponte Vecchio for last. Be mindful of the time you need to be back to your bus for the return trip. You dont want to miss it (and the ship).
CJean Thank you so much - this is just the info I was looking for.
google shows travel time of 70 minutes to 2 hrs. ( estimated arrival 10:55 to 11:45)
Given you will be leaving when a whole boat full of people are ( other boats too?) I would plan on the trip taking closer to the longer time than the shorter.
Given your limited time in Florence as a day trip from a cruise, might you get more out of visiting a couple of churches in addition to the Duomo, rather than visiting the Accademia? Consider
- San Lorenzo - Medici chapel with sculptures/tombs by Michelangelo; library designed by Michelangelo
- Santa Maria Novella - near the train station. Frescoes by Masaccio and Ghirlandaio
- Santa Maria del Carmine - Brancacci chapel - Masolino & Massacio
- Santa Trinita - Sassetti chapel (Ghirlandaio)
- Ognissanti; frescoes by Botticelli & Ghirlandaio
- Santa Croce - tombs of Michelangelo, Galileo and Machiavelli. This might be a geographic outlier, given your limited time.
