My family (2 adult, 1 child) are planning to stay in Florence for about a week. I'm looking at renting an apartment west of downtown about 3 miles in the "Porto al Prato" neighborhood , near the Cascine Park. Anyone have experience with this area? Is it safe for walking at night, quiet for sleeping? Any other impressions? Thanks -

It depends how near your place is to the Cascine park. That well-treed, river-bordering park is beautiful and worth a daytime stroll. It even hosts a wonderful weekly market. But at night ... it becomes something else - a place to find prostitutes, gay company, drugs, and a risk to be robbed or beaten. So if you stay away when darkness falls, you'll be OK, as you will if your apartment is at least 1 mile away from the treed area.

Thanks for the reply. Yes I had a feeling the park would not be a place to go after dark, at least not for us - The place I'm looking at is between the park and the main road to the north (Via Francesco Baracca), about half mile from the treed area it looks like.
