Florence - Pitti Palace question

Hello! We will be in Florence during the first week in December. Are the Boboli Gardens a winter must see, or are they only for Spring and Summer/Fall?

Thanks!

The first week of December is autumn. Whether they are a "must-see" or not depends on your interests. Will you visit any museums at Pitti Palace? How much time do you have to spend there? What else do you plan on doing during your time in Florence?

So far I have seen many pictures of Boboli Gardens and none of them include flowers or blooming trees. They are formal with statues, fountains, man-made caves and ponds, obelisks, an amphitheater, rows of cypress trees, and manicured bushes.

I think the key is whether you have a deep interest in gardens to begin with? The Boboli Gardens are most notable for their Renaissance design: tightly symmetric and, in this case, carefully planned to extend the image of (Medici) power, wealth and sophistication reflected in the palace itself. It is very light on flora even during summer - with the exception of a rose garden at the top of the hill behind the palace - but has a plethora of statuary, fountains and hidden corners.

That said, master gardeners/architects would find value in any season but I'm not sure sure about the visitor whose interest is mostly in 'pretty' outdoor spaces?

Kathy is right, I am not a gardens person although I enjoy them as a break from other sights. I go to Firenze every couple of years but haven't been to the Boboli Gsrdens for 30 years - probably time to revisit.
