Florence or Cinque Terre

We have 3 free days (out of our scheduled 14) and are trying to decide: Florence or Cinque Terra. If we don't stay there, we will probably manage a day trip to Florence so we wouldn't miss it altogether. Also, we'll be without a car and be training back to Rome after our 3 days. Suggestions?

To me they are very different venues and it depends on what you enjoy doing and what you have done to that point on your trip.

-CT is seaside with hiking, the beach, taking the train from town to town to see the buildings perched on the hillsides or just hanging out in a restaurant overlooking the water and enjoying the view.

-Florence, to me, is about a bustling city filled with art , architecture, restaurants and shopping.

I enjoyed both. If you have had an overload of cities you might enjoy the CT for a vacation from your vacation as Rick says. If you are passionate about Renaissance art, then Florence might be more enjoyable.

I would say that neither one needs three full days (or is that three nights and two days?) While it's always tempting to stay longer, two nights and one full day in Cinque Terre can be enough to get the experience. Maybe that will allow you another night in Siena, or wherever you'll be based close enough to daytrip to Florence.

Supposedly one-fifth of the world's art treasures are in Florence. I don't understand how someone could say that Florence doesn't merit three days without finding out more about your interests. One important additional factor here (in addition to your interests) is what time of year you're talking about. The CT definitely have an off-season.
