Florence on 1st Sunday of the month

My family will be in Florence on the first weekend in June. Arriving mid afternoon on Saturday and leaving Monday morning - making Sunday our main sightseeing day. From what I'm reading the Uffizi and Accademia (along with many other sites) are free on the 1st Sunday of the month and do not take reservations. Any suggestions on how to spend our day? Also if we were to book a private tour do they still have preferred entry?

My first recommendation is to avoid "free" days since the locals like a free day even better than American tourists. Unfortunately you and hundreds will spend much time in long lines. Just ask the private tour company about by-pass lines.
