Florence Music Venues

My wife and I will be in Firenze at the end of September/beginning of October and are interested in attending a classical concert or opera. We are the consummate novices as far as this goes so my apologies in advance if my priorities or interests seem naive or unusual. That being said, it seems that the venue itself could significantly effect the overall experience, all other things being equal. As such, I'd be interested in feedback and recommendations relative to the venues that I've found - the Auditorium al Duomo, Teatro Odeon, Chiesa di Santa Monaca, Chiesa di Orsanmichele and St. Mark's English Church.

Any additional thoughts or suggestions are most welcome. Thanks for you help, Ken

I always wonder why nobody considers the true, full-size opera with full choir and orchestra at the brand new, very modern Opera di Firenze. As an added bonus, from the roof of the venue (always accessible) you can have a look to all the centre. It is already a favorite place for photographers.

We've already experienced the new opera house in Oslo where my cousin is a prima ballerina and where they also hold concerts on the roof. My wife is a semi-professional photographer and her photos of the Oslo building have been selected for several juried shows.

In Italy, we're trying to focus on classic, historical buildings such as hotels, theaters, etc. It's just a preference, us old guys do get nostalgic at times.

If you want a classic, historical building, you should try to intercept some Amici della Musica concerts at La Pergola theatre. First built in 17th century and magnificently redone in early 19th century, it was the venue where Vivaldi, Donizetti and Verdi had some of their operas first performed.

Among all the other venues you quote, only Orsanmichele has a long history - but as a church and as Florence's main wheat deposit, not as a concert venue. A lot of concerts formerly housed in Orsanmichele are now hosted in the baroque S. Stefano al Ponte church, very near to Ponte Vecchio but somewhat concealed in a little piazza.
