My husband, teenager and I will be visiting Florence in June. When we travel, we typically visit museums first thing in the morning to "beat the crowds", however I'm wondering if, in Florence, visiting the Uffizi Gallery and Accademia in the afternoon may be better to "beat the heat". My logic is that we could enjoy outdoor activities in the cooler weather of the first half of the day, and then head to museums in the afternoon for some respite from the heat. Are the crowds worse in the afternoon than in the morning? Are the museums warm in the afternoon even with A/C? Thank you for any feedback or suggestions.
I think your instincts are right about visiting the Museums 1st thing in the morning to avoid crowds. You may have to purchase timed entry tickets, anyway. In the Afternoon you can go on a day trip. Or linger over lunch on a covered terrace. The average high temp in June is supposed to be 80. I think you can handle that being from Portland. I was there in July and the "Heat" didn't bother this Seattleite! You might have a heat wave...just wear a sun hat.
It's best to visit museums when you have the most energy. I also advise visiting Accademia afterwards since that doesn't require as much energy and the line moves fast. The only bad thing about visiting museums in the morning are large tour groups that block your view.
We did both those museums in late August on a RS 21 BOE tour. We went to both at 4pm and didn’t find either to be that crowded especially for the time of day or the month. Just our experience this last summer
