Florence museums-advance tickets

We will be in Florence on Tuesday, May 17 2016. How far in advance do I need to book tickets for the Uffizi and Academia. We want to go to the Uffizi around 10 am and the Academia around 3 pm. People have suggested it is better to call. Can I just call the day before, or when I arrive in Italy a few days earlier? Or should I book online before I leave?

We booked online for both and it worked perfectly. There were two people in front of us in the line for those with tickets (we will-called inside after waiting a few minutes in this line) and a couple of hundred in the line for those without tickets, just like Rick said.

It sounds like you have your hotel booked for that date so I would go ahead to book the museums now, as well.

I agree with Laura that you should book your tickets ahead of time, especially since you have one specific date, and then specific times you want. We were there at the beginning of May last year, and the lines to buy tickets for the Academia were several blocks long by 10 AM. An option could be to have your hotel book them for you. That is a service many hotels offer.
