Florence Museums

Update - We'll be in Florence mid Jun and early July

Well ... looks like I'll get the Giotto Pass (prefer to climb the bell tower than the dome) and a ticket to see David.

There are a number of individual tickets available on the B-Ticket website, and each one needs a day and time

We've seen the Uffizi already, and wondering if it's easiest to simply go to the other museums on our own and buy individual tickets. I'd guess the lines would be shorter but don't know.

Here are the different museums I can get a B-Ticket for. I'm curious which ones people particularly like, and if they'd recommend getting an advanced ticket for them, or just show up.

If I could buy a combo card, I would, rather than buying a bunch of different tickets, but I don't see that as an option.

Your recommendations?

In the past I've never needed a ticket in advance for the Bargello but I haven't gone in high season. The Medici Chapels are very small so only a very limited number of people are admitted at a time. I'd get a ticket in advance and timed entry if possible, and then expect to stand in line for a while.

I highly recommend San Marco for it’s Fra Angelico collection.

Another strong vote for San Marco: terrific museum. We also enjoyed the Bargello. Galleria Palatina/Galleria Arte Moderna/Boboli Gardens is a serious time-eater. The palace/collections are very large as are the gardens. I'd only do the Boboli if you understand that you're not going to see masses of flowers and meticulously groomed grounds; they're not that sort of 'gardens'. I'd only do the palace - where the 2 galleries mentioned are - if you're a pretty serious art lover.

We were not all that taken with Cappelle Medicee; of all the attractions we did in Florence, we could have skipped that one. IMHO, the Chapel of the Princes was a garish assault of ostentatiousness, and if looking for Michelangelo's works, those in the New Sacristy are not his best. YMMV.

I'm another big fan of the San Marco Museum-it's a rare opportunity to see art in its original setting. I would be surprised if you needed to purchase that ticket in advance.

We were in Florence a couple of weeks ago. We just walked up for tickets to Palazzo Pitti and Boboli gardens. There were probably 5 people in front of us on a Saturday afternoon. The walk-up line for the Accademia was down the block and around the corner.

Sunday, July 3 will be a Free First Sunday at the Italian State Museums. You probably will want to avoid the busiest of them on this day. The "Discover Tuscany" site has a list of State Museums in Florence and surrounding Tuscany:

https://www.discovertuscany.com/tuscany-museums/state-museums-in-tuscany.html

LOL, The page contains this text:

For the latest news and updates, including a check on opening hours,
please visit the Ministry of Culture website that lists all the places
that participate in the Domenica al Museo initiative. The page links
to each site, with hours and contact info, and also lists all of the
other sites across Italy, not just Tuscany so check it if you're in
Italy on the first weekend in Italy.

That last line in bold they'd linked to the Ministero Della Cultura....and it does not work either! 🙄

Loved the San Marco Museum. Just visited there recently. Rick has an audio tour that you should DEFINITELY download. The value it added to our visit there was immeasurable. We had a much deeper experience.

Also, many of the other museums were absolutely packed with long lines and crowds -- but not this one. Their hours are something like 8:00 AM to 1:30 PM. We arrived around 9:30 and it was lovely and calm. One of my favorite things that we did in Florence.

Also, really enjoyed the Innocenti Museum but didn't see that on your list. It has excellent english signage throughout which not all Italian museums have.
