When I tried to book Accademia and Uffizi online, the prices were considerably higher than stated in The Book. For two people there was an online booking fee of E20 in addition to a E7 special exhibition fee and E21 entrance fee. Any ideas why things are so different than I expected after reading The Book?
The cheapest I found was using this site:
http://www.b-ticket.com/b-ticket/Uffizi/
6.50 euros for a ticket,
4.00 euros for reservation fee,
10.50 euros total
Members of this board suggest calling the museum direct for a time slot not available on the website. You can also ask your hotel to reserve them. The hotel where I will be staying at charged me 1 euro commission per ticket and that is not a big deal because the long distance call will cost more than that. Good luck!
I just made my reservations for Accademia, Uffizi, and Bargello today. I also had to pay more than the book said. Two of them were E15.99 and one was E11.98 (per person prices). My cell phone won't make international calls, so I had to use the online method. I wasn't too happy.
I don't think a reservation is really needed for the Bargello. Two summers ago (at the peak of high season) we were able to go right in without much of a wait. Also, once we got to Florence we purchased a "Friends of the Uffizi" pass (Amici de Uffizi) that ended up saving us some money in getting into all of the Florence museums.
Michael, have you tried the recommended reservation site listed above? They only charge four euros instead of twenty per ticket being reserved.
I know that if either gallery is offering a special presentation, they charge more during that timeframe (there was a musical instrument display at the Accademia when I went, so they tacked on another 10 Euros per ticket). The other two possibilities is that the book (not sure which one you're using) either has outdated prices, or is not advising you of the surcharge that is added on to reserve tickets in advance. You do not need to pay that surcharge if you just show up and get in line, but then you might have to wait a very long time before getting in.
The official reservation fee is 4 Euro on top of the ticket price. And that's the price you get charged when using the "official" online site or if you phone in to request reservations. There are a few booking sites out there that charge more to make a profit. Looks like you landed on one of the latter sites.
The Book is Rick's Italy 2009.
Is a reservation needed at the Bargello?
Sure wish Rick had put this reservation site in his Florence book! I would have spent nearly half of what I did. Oh, well. Live and learn.
That reservation site is most definitely in his books.
That is WAY WAY too much money to pay. You could spend less by taking a tour of either or both museumes.
I would see if your hotel can make a reservation for you. Or if you're going at a low tourist season or on a weekday i would take a chance of not making a reservation. I never make one for the Accademia (i've been 6 times in the past 4 years). The longest I've waited was maybe 20 minutes.
