I'm headed to Florence and Montecatini for 10 days in Sept. 2010 with a small group of friends and would like info about things to see/skip in those 2 areas. I like cooking and eating great food, the beach (not nearby I know) and interacting with locals if possible. Also, for side trips from Montecatini we will need to travel by train/bus so any suggestions on the best way to do this would be helpful. And a couple of us may stay a few extra days to go to Rome -would appreciate info re: the best way to travel there from Montecatini.

Here's the website where you look at train schedules

Looks like Montecatini to Rome takes 2 and 3/4 to 4 hrs, depending on which train (faster trains sometimes cost more). Those times don't include the time to get to the Montecatini station, wait for the train, etc.
