I recently saw a PBS special on the Medici. One of the many featured pieces of Medici-commissioned art was a piece that featured different exotic animals. I believe it was still in a religious context. Unfortunately I don't remember the name of the work or the artist. Does this sound familiar? Where is it exhibited today?

I'm pretty sure that you are looking for "The Journey of the Magi" by Benozzo Gozzoli. It is in the Chapel of the Magi in the Medici-Riccardi Palace.
