Sounds like in RS' book just about anywhere in Florence is 'central' -- what are your experiences and recommendations? We'll have 2 nights here.
Melinda, Florence's historic center is very compact, so anything from Santa Maria Novella (train station area) to the Lungarno (along the river) is central. It's flat and easy to walk (but oh those miles of museum hallways and stairs!). I stayed at Hotel Medici last year, it's near the Duomo. I think I paid about 40 euro for a single with bath and breakfast, the single was tiny hence the good price. They have a rooftop terrace with great views, the Duomo and Bell Tower look close enough to touch. Avoid rooms on the 6th floor (where the terrace is), since guests congregate there early and late.
Hotel Azzi is a 5 minute walk from the train station. Check out reviews on Tripadvisor.
Zoe and John -- thank you for your tips!
We found a perfect little B&B in Florence in a good location for visiting the sights and not far from the station Relais Tiffany B&B in Florence The owner Julia made us breakfast every morning and was so kind to us throughout our stay.
Thank you Steve!
Thank you Steve!
We stayed at the "Hotel Corona D'Italia", a 5 minute walk from the SMN train station. A nice place, non-smoking, but 118 rooms, I believe he told me, so there were several touring choirs there. One morning the breakfast room was jammed with singers! But the hotel was quiet, the price reasonable and the staff quite helpful. The only downside was that there was no computer for guests to use. However, there is a cheap (E1.50 per hour) internet cafe around the corner, (well, without coffee...)it's open late, and the gelato shops are still open when you walk back to the hotel at midnight! A fantastic restaurant is practically next door: The "Antica something or other". The hawker outside seemed a bit cheesy, but they do post a 5 star Trip Advisor rating sign. So we tried it - INCREDIBLE gnocci with gorgonzola sauce. Out of this world! Oh - and be sure to WALK to most hotels. After the long train ride, my wife insisted on a taxi. But because the street from the hotel to the station is one-way, the cab driver had to drive a 10 minute route that cost 11 Euros! Going back to the station 3 days later, my wife exclaimed "That's how close it is ???" :)
