Florence locations

Have not been to Florence since 1997. Enjoyed our stay but would like to know which areas of the city are better, cleaner and safer than others.
Has anyone stayed at Hotels Santa Maria Novella, Grand Minerva, Diplomat, Ambasciotori, Calzouli, Rosso23, Cerentani(soffitel)

I will be in Florence in October of 2009 and have also been there before but we are staying 3 days this time, have tickets for the Academia and Uffizi. We are staying at a hotel right near the Santa Maria Novella train station. Any suggestions on restaurants and day trips would be very helpful. Being a group of women you know we love to shop. Any suggestions on SICA bus day trips. Thanks.

Hi
I just returned from 3 weeks vacation. I stayed in Carravaggio Hotel. The hotel is approx. 5 minutes walk from the train station, is very clean, has a bar, internet and a great breakfast which is included. After experiencing the chaos of Paris and Rome I found most Florence safe and pretty clean.

Rachelle: Here's SITA (not SICA) bus schedules, not in English and not user friendly, but it's the best we've been able to find for buses in that area

You'll have to click around to find the Tuscany schedules.

Calzouli - if you mean Calzaiuoli is right in the center of town and an excellent location to explore the city from. Florence is a pretty safe city, especially in the center. Things (crime) can happen anywhere but in the center you should be fine - there are usually always people around, police, security guards, etc. and the city is blanketed with security cameras...
