Florence itinerary for 7 days

We are planning a trip to Italy and will be in Florence for 7 days. Do have a recommended itinerary? we are open to going to Tuscany but not sure if they should be day trips or just stay in both locations.

Tuscany isn't a place, it's a region, which includes Florence. You must have had a reason why you allocated a full week. How much time do you want to spend in Florence? What are your interests? Renaissance art? Architecture? Food? Wine making? Hiking? Cities, towns, or rural areas? What towns or cities in Tuscany (besides Florence) are you interested in? Is this week your whole trip, or are you visiting other places before or after?

Great questions from CJean. And where/how are you getting to Italy? Are you flying in and out of Florence?

As mentioned, Florence is the capital of Tuscany, and Tuscany is a region with a lot of ground that could be covered. What you might choose to do depends on what you're interested in and how you prefer to get around. A car, say, is a liability for Florence but can be a necessity for more remote towns in Tuscany. That said, there's a number of day trips that are easily done via public transit (trains or bus).

Not a stupid question, just sort of difficult to answer!

Right! The only "stupid" question is the one which isn't asked. :O)
It's just that some additional info would help us to help you, thus the questions.

We just returned from our first trip to Italy and spent 2.5 days and 3 nights in Florence. (About the same in Rome, Cinque Terre, and Venice as well to get an overview of each place. It was great.) It seemed to us, talking with other travelers, that most "day trips" from Florence were an hour each way to go do, besides the C.T. So you have to decide what it is you want to do, as others have noted. Some people could spend every day in one of the museums. Others would be bored silly. I would consider spending 2-3 nights someplace outside of Florence for a more rural Tuscan experience with wine tastings and the like then hit Florence proper for walks and museums (Pitti Palace was a cool spot, in addition to the big two.) We can highly recommend the Park Palace Hotel (villa) maybe two miles south of the Ponte Vecchio bridge. Easy walk down, 10E taxi up at the end of the night. Good breakfast and very good dinner. Ask for a room with a balcony!

One note about the rural locations and very small towns? They usually involve the need to rent a car. That's fine for some travelers but it does involve extra homework and isn't something everyone is up for taking on.

I've never been clear on how people drive around Tuscany (or anywhere), if a major interest is wine tasting.
