Florence itinerary

We're traveling from Rome to Florence on a Sunday afternoon, and we'll be there Sunday night, Monday night, and Tuesday night. We will be arriving on the 5th Sunday of the month, so some additional museums/sites might be open. How would you structure an itinerary to hit the main sites on Sunday afternoon/evening and Tuesday, but also visit some interesting places on Monday? We're also thinking of spending Monday at markets and shops, to cook a feast in our apartment. Thoughts?

On the Sunday after arriving I would spend time in Piazza della Signoria before heading across Ponte Vecchio and up to Piazzale Michelangelo.
Your options for Monday, when the Uffizi and Academy are closed, include Palazzo Vecchio, Medici Chapels, Brancacci Chapel, Santa Croce, the Bargello Museum plus the Duomo and Baptistery.
Perhaps begin Tuesday by climbing the Campanile or Duomo before hitting the museums.

We were in Florence last week .

If you are intersted in climbing to the top of the dome at the Duomo, plan to do this as SOON as they open in the morning. We got in line at 8:20 for the 8:30 opening at the Dome and the line moved fairly quickly. But in sections the people going up must take turns with the people coming down. it backs up very quickly. We really enjoyed the view, but the crowd was a bit intense.

I follwed Roberto's advice from this forum and booked the Accademia and the Uffizi Gallery late in the day on two separate days. We did the Accademia very late in the afternoon we arrived - it was a perfect introduction to the City and the museum was not very crowded (considering that Florence was absolutely packed the entire time we were there).

The Mercato Centrale is fantastic! shopping and eating there were great.
