Florence (Impruneta) to Monterosso Al Mar via Pisa and Lucca

Hello.

This summer our family of five will be traveling from our rental apartment outside of Florence to our rental in Monterosso. We plan on getting an early start on the day and hope to arrive in Monterosso around 17:00. We will have a rental car.

We would like to make stops in Lucca (no real serious sight-seeing, just enjoy the city, ride a bike, grab lunch) and Pisa if time permits.

What would be the best route. Looking at a map (and Via Michelin) it's not obvious to me whether to go to Pisa or Lucca first. What would be the travel time from one of those cities to Monterosso?

Thanks for any suggestions!

If you want to have lunch in Lucca, go there first. Travel time differential hitting either Lucca or Pisa first is minimal with a car.

Where are you traveling after Monterosso?

You might be able to visit Pisa then.

Well, Pisa is south and Lucca is a bit north. But, from Florence you have to drive right by Lucca, turn north and go to 5 Terre. So, in that regard, Pisa is a little bit out of the way.

Autostrada A11 goes from Florence to A12, the coastal autostrada. You go through Lucca. Just past Lucca A11 branches, one south to Pisa and one north to Viareggio. So, Lucca first, Pisa second, and then Monterosso.

The drive down to Monterosso is a dandy. Enjoy it but be careful. While there maybe take a boat and see the other towns from the sea. That is always a great way to enjoy 5 Terre.

Firenze Impruneta direction Bologna to Firenze Nord exit (second exit). Take directions to A11 Pisa Migliarino. Exit at Lucca and enjoy the city. If time permits you can go to Pisa (same freeway or regular road). All you need is two hours in Pisa. If you decide to skip Pisa then take the Bretella (bypass) to Viareggio which connects to the A12 to Genova. Exit the A12 at Levanto. At Levanto you will reach a roundabout. 3rd exit to Cinque Terre, Monterosso
