I take a group of well-behaved, dedicated history students to Florence every year, but never stay overnight there. In 2011, we will be spending one night. We have our own coach so can stay outside of the city itself no problem. Any recommendations for a large group with a tight budget? I don't want to stay at the youth hostel - I've heard it compared to the big one in Rome, which was the worst hostel I've ever brought a group to (and I've stayed in many throughout Western and Eastern Europe!).
Istituto Gould would be an excellent choice for a group on a budget. We enjoyed our stay there. It was across the river, easy walking distance from the famous Florence sights.

There are also a lot of pictures and reviews on Tripadvisor.
I stayed at the Istituto Gould as well, it was excellent.
Istituto Gould - I just checked the website... this is great! I stay at Foresteria Valdese in Venice (an amazing find for the price and location), and am not surprised they run a hostel in Florence too. Coincidence - the hostel in Venice is also located in a restored 16th century palace (just like the Istituto Gould advertises in Florence).
Thanks! Any other suggestions still welcome... I might not be able to book it for my large group, but will be trying soon once I have participant numbers/genders nailed down.
