I just returned from a Tuscan holiday & while in Florence stayed at Hotel Medici, located 1/2 block from Piazza Republicca and 1 block the other way from the Duomo, so just a fantastic location. Also only about 2.5 blocks to San Lorenzo market. Has a rooftop deck that overlooks the Duomo. No food served up there, so you can bring your own. They do sell beer and wine at low cost. Hotel is very simple (no TVs, or phones), but the rooms are very clean, safe with someone on the front desk 24/7, with private bath and the hotel has an elevator! Breakfast included, but basic rolls, etc. Front desk staff very helpful & can book tours, etc. As a solo woman traveler, I felt very safe staying there and the rate was fantastic - less than 40/euro a ngt for a single room.
