Florence Hotel Questions

We will be in Florence in 2 weeks (for 5 days, 4 nights), and most of Rick Steve's hotels are unavailable at this point. I will keep trying, but does anyone have any additional recommendations for Florence that are not in the book? I have found a few suggestions online, but nothing that helps us have at least 2 solid nights in the heart of Florence for under $500 a night. We plan to be exploring much more that using the accommodations, so we are also flexible in terms of elegance.

We were going to stay close to the terminal one of the days for a day trip to Cinque as well. Thanks!

Try www.booking.com. It's a hotel site quite a number of us use: totally legitimate. You can search by price and by review ratings, and browse the written reviews by previous guests. You'll also be able to see where they're located on a map.

This is a little confusing? You don't need to be "close to the terminal" (I assume you mean the train station?) for that trip. Florence is not that big so if you're staying in the center, you likely won't be a long walk from your hotel so I wouldn't change accommodations just for that one night.

I looked at the hotel that I've stayed at and no availability. I like to use tripadvisor to research rooms and it seems very little is available for those dates. I did a little research on airbnb and it seemed like you would be able to find something that way. Haven't used airbnb much (used to use vrbo quite a bit). I'd try to pick a place that has a fair amount of reviews. Just my 2 cents for what it's worth.

We stayed at Il Guelfo Bianco in 2014 when we were in Florence. A five minute walk from the Duomo.

No, but it's in a very good location, has very good reviews, and it looks lovely! I'd book it if the price works for you!

Check Hotel Casci. Great location. Not sure of your dates but they do have some availability in May/June. You might also try Heart of Florence B&B. Have no idea of the availability there.

I just performed a general search for holiday apartments in the historic center of Florence and found a wide selection of 1 bedroom units in the $100-$175 dollar range. Of course, I don't your exact travel dates... But, it's worthwhile to look at apartments as they are generally more comfortable, have amenities you won't find in a hotel and often are no more expensive than moderately priced hotel rooms.

By the way, Florence is a very compact and walkable city. If you stay anywhere in the historic center, you're really not more than a 10 or 15 minute walk from anything, including the train station. However, it's my personal opinion that the Cinque Terra isn't a very good DIY day-trip destination as the travel time is so long. If you really want to see the Cinque Terra, a couple days would be in order and it's probably too late to get affordable accommodations.

We stayed at Hotel Europa 2 years ago, a Rick Steve's recommended family hotel. It was very close to the Duomo, and just up from the Medici Palace. The owners were very helpful. Not very fancy, but clean and pleasant and a nice breakfast. I put in the dates June 23-27, and they had 4 rooms ranging from $627-647 for the 4 nights.

I like Hotel Bigallo, around the corner from the Baptistry.

By the way, four nights is three full days and two partial days.

I moved our dates around (ensuring they still weren't Sunday and Monday). After trying over 30 hotels and 13 bed and breakfasts (listed as vacant when they weren't), Hotel dei Macchiaioli came through. Thank you, everyone.
