We’ll be leaving Naples on a Saturday morning and we’ll be leaving to return to the US on Friday morning from Venice. I’m looking for suggestions for a Florence/ hilltop town. Should we do a day long excursion from Florence and if so can you suggest and easy day trip town? Or a town for an overnight on the way to Florence with an easy train route? I’m thinking that Thursday day and evening in Venice is sufficient as our primary objective in Venice is to take our daughter on a gondola ride that she’s been dreaming of!!
You can take a direct train (no transfers) from Naples Central station to Florence S.M. Novella station (3h 15m) and sleep there for four nights. After two days in Florence take a direct bus to Siena for the day (1h 15m).
It sounds like you’re short-changing Venice that deserves three nights too. I think you should cut out the Tuscan hill town, especially since it’s even better if you can spend the night.
Thank you for the recommendations. We actually do have a couple of things planned for Venice. My daughter is an artist so we intend to soak up some art Ed everywhere we go. I’m contemplating two nights there. Unfortunately, we will have already been in Italy for a week before Florence. I do have to prioritize.
I second all of what MaryPat said.
I understand that if you are being art centric Florence is very hard to beat in terms of art world "must sees" and a relatively quiet hilltown day could be a nice break from the big cities. But I would advocate for more time in Venice if you can. Schedules always make for trade-offs and you never get to see everything but Venice is something special.
Sounds like a great trip,
