Florence & Heart of Tuscan

I am planning a trip with friends in late Sept./Oct. 2024 and currently viewing Florence. Our plan was to stay for five nights in Florence and explore the areas. Rick Steves's book mentions some stays in Florence but then also in Montalcino for the small town and wineries. Since we are staying 5 nights, we didn't think about jumping from place to place meaning Florence and then Montalcino.
Would it be better to stay in Florence the whole time and travel to the wineries or split the time between the two areas?

I also thought about renting a van for us to travel since it sounds like public transportation isn't as easy in the area as in other towns like Roma and Amalfi Coast. Has anyone gone this route of renting and driving? I did see that Tours by Roberto will also pick groups up and tour the wineries.
I would appreciate it if anyone had great suggestions for hotels with middle-of-the-road prices in Florence. We will be in Italy for 14 days, so trying to be smart with prices.

I have enjoyed studying all the Q&As on the forum- Such a helpful site.

Welcome!

Is that 5 nights in the area or 5 nights in Florence then more time in Tuscany?
A car is very useful for the Tuscany hill towns but you don't need or want it in Florence.
Determine how many nights you need in Florence then give the other nights to a hill town with a car.

We like Pienza and Montepulciano best. Siena is another option but a bit more difficult with a car as parking and ZTLs are an issue there.
How many people in your party? I wouldn't want a van if can be avoided- parking will be an issue with that large vehicle.

If you do decide to rent a car and drive be sure to read up on driving in Italy- ZTLs, parking, speeding cameras, alcohol limits (much stricter than US so you'll need a designated driver).
All drivers must have an IDP- International Driving permit that you get at your local AAA.
We always rent thru AutoEurope.com- a US based consolidator with excellent customer service, usually best rates.

Tours by Robert gets excellent reviews- I would not hesitate to go with that plan. I believe most of his tours leave from Siena.

For Florence hotels- start by searching this forum and checking booking.com. You can set your filters by price, amenities etc. You can trust the reviews there as can only be left by folks who have actually stayed at the property.

You need at least 3 nights in Florence, so basically two full days, just to visit the bare minimum sights of Florence (if Florence is in your plans). If you want to take day trips to the Tuscan countryside from Florence you need to add one night for each day trip you intend to make. Having a car in Florence is not needed nor advisable, unless you plan to stay outside the historical city center (which is closed to non residents' cars), so to visit Tuscan towns from Florence you would rely on public transportation (trains & buses) and maybe some organized small tours from Florence (of which there are many from many companies), that is especially advisable if you plan to do some drinking since Italian laws on alcohol while driving are very strict (and country roads are very curvy, so I wouldn't want you to end up in some ditch with your car).

If you plan to split your time between Florence (without a car) and someplace in the country (with a car) then you need several nights at your disposal. As I said Florence needs a minimum of 3 nights, then if you want to stay somewhere else in the country I would want to have at least another 3 nights at my disposal for Tuscany. Visiting small towns is certainly more convenient and efficient with a private car, however be aware that roads and ancient town streets are narrow, therefore a large vehicle like a van, would be more difficult to negotiate those roads and the parking. Also to rent a van costs on average 3 times as much as renting an economy car, therefore if you have a large party, with multiple drivers, it is often cheaper (and easier) to rent a couple of small cars rather than one van. Nowadays even small cars cost a lot (about $350-400 per week).

I don't know what your budget for hotels is, but for a decent 3 star hotel in Florence you need at least 150 euro per room (double occupancy) per night during peak periods, such as Sept/Oct. For a 4 star hotel you are looking at least 200 euro. For hotels I would use booking.com and see what you like. If you are staying for an extended period in Florence (over 3 nights) and/or you have a large family, it might be better to rent an apartment through AirBnB or VRBO. That would probably save you some money.

Thank you, Christine and Roberto-
There will be 6 in our party, but it sounds like it would be best to skip renting a vehicle. Great advice.

The original plan was to spend all five nights in Florence as our home base. I will share your thoughts about splitting the time between Florence and the smaller towns like Montalcino. The group can help decide. :-)
I appreciate the help!
