Florence for 4 nights?

My wife and I am traveling for 2 weeks in Italy. Originally we were doing 3 nights but we can get a free 4th night so we are unsure what to do. Excluding the fact that it's a free night, can we use Florence as a base point to explore some parts of Tuscany before actually go into other parts/zones of Tuscany? Maybe saying it another way is it too long to stay in Florence for 4 nights?

The trip itinerary so far is 3 nights in Milan, 2 nights in Cinque Terre, then on to Florence, the maybe into Tuscany or what?

Florence is incredibly dense with important sites for Renaissance art. Here are some of my must sees in order of importance: Brancacci Chapel (best thing there IMHO), Uffizi, PIazzale Michelangelo for the great view (your holiday card shot of the family) with San Miniato church nearby, Academia (David), Bargello, Santa Croce and Santa Maris Novella, the Baptistry, San Marco, Climb the dome of the Duomo, Ponte Vecchio, Palazzo Pitti and Boboli Gardens -- and there is a lot more than that if you have time, which you don't e.g. San Lorenzo, Medici Chapel, Santo Spiritu etc etc. 4 nights is 3 days -- that is barely scratching the highlights. If you feel that two days is enough Florence for you then a day trip by bus to Siena would be marvelous. About an hour; the bus leaves you in the historic center and this is an amazing place. The cathedral is jaw dropping, the Campo town square is arguably the most beautiful in Italy and climbing the Torre Mangia is memorable. https://janettravels.wordpress.com/2011/09/18/climbing-the-torre-mangia-at-67/

Have you ever been to Venice? Unless there's really some compelling reason keep you in Milan 3 nights then definitely skip it and do Venice - like no other city in the world!

Are you flying in and out of Milano? You could see some highlights in two nights rather than three and dip Venezia into the mix.

We went the path of Milan, Lake Como, Venice last year. We really enjoyed Milan which is why we are staying 3 nights this time.

I'll check at some of the things Janet said. I'm still trying to get a feel as to whether we could bus or do more things inside or out of Florence?

There are any number of day trips which can easily be taken from Florence but as Jane said, the city has more than enough to keep you busy depending on what you like to do/see. We had 5 nights (4.5 days) there and couldn't cover it all.

I did four nights in Florence last summer and thought it was perfect. We spent a day and a few evenings walking around the city and going into the museums. We then did a day trip to Cinque Terre, a half-day trip to Pisa and a day trip into Tuscany with "Fun in Tuscany" tours. You can easily fill up 4 days in Florence!

There is plenty to do in Florence, however, if you want a little more village atmosphere you can easily take those day tours or wine tasting trips from Florence. But, if you prefer the countryside, then I would stay in the countryside, instead of traveling from a city to a village. I like the village life better, so while I have stayed in Florence a number of days, a couple days in a row is fine for me.

The 4th night free at the hotel might make the decision for me:)

If you have already been to Milan, why don't you try to visit Torino and the Langhe region ( Barolo), I am sure you would lové it.

Florence is wonderful and you would not get bored even after 1 month.
If you do however: the following are ideas:
Fiesole
Vinci ( try the trattoria near the House of Leonardo, they have really good Fiorentina meat)
Siena
Lucca
Pistoia
