Florence Duomo-to climb or not to climb?

Hello! I am planning my first trip to Italy to celebrate my 40th birthday! I have only one day in Florence, noon-noon. Second week of September. I'm wondering if the Duomo is a must do/must climb. I'm willing and able and ready! I just want to make sure and get as much of a "full" Florence experience within the timeframe. Any other tips you may have for me? Thanks in advance!

If you have only one day in Florence, I would not do the climb. Too me, the "full" Florence experience can't be done in a day. But, since that's all you have, I'd go to either the Uffizi or the Accademia to see David. Then, spend some time just walking around, have a gelato, sit in a piazza and people watch and go somewhere nice for dinner. Another nice museum is the San Marco museum, which isn't far from the Accademia, so you could do both of those. It a smaller museum and doesn't cost much. It's a former monastery with a lot of Fra Angelico art.
You can tell I'm more into the museums, haha. Hope you have a nice time.

It was a " must do" for us after reading Brunelleschi's Dome, which explains how it was built.

We felt much more capable of appreciating the engineering behind it after reading the book.

We went first thing in the morning ( were first in line as we did not want to be behind others). It did not take much time out of our day at all. Plus it is cooler in the early morning.

It really is up to you and your interests. I find the dome climb fun and interesting, and the views spectacular. But your time is pretty limited, so you need to be very harsh about editing your schedule.

Did the dome climb and very glad that I did it. Also, did the dome climb to the roof of St. Peter's in Rome.

We did the climb of both the Duomo.and the tower. If you want an unbelievable view, climb the tower to see the Duomo up.close and personal. If it were my trip, I would visit David (really, an unforgetable momemt), roam the streets that evening, then climb the Tower the next morning!
