Where do you purchase a ticket for an 8.30 climb of the duomo dome? I notice the duomo museum does not open until 9.00.
Also, how long does it take to climb to the top of the dome?

You pay. Near the bottom of the stairs. Depending on foot traffic and your fitness I'd say 15 min is more than enough.

If I recall correctly, the Duomo climb is outside the church about halfway down the block (the church is a block) on the left side of the church (when facing the front doors). I may be wrong, we chose to climb the bell tower (so we could see the dome) rather than the dome.

It's 463 steps. So if you go on a stair stepper at the gym you can get an idea of how long it will take you. The only issue is traffic, because the staircase is in part a very narrow spiral staircase. If there are a lot of people coming down while you go up, traffic comes to a halt and people have to alternate going up and down.

Geoff, this is a " don't miss " site, as long as you aren't claustrophobic. As noted by Roberto, it does get quite tight & crowded in several sections.
