Florence-Duomo

Hey guys,

My wife and I were thinking about spending 15 Euros each to climb the steps at or near The Duomo for the view. Has anyone done it and is it amazing and worth doing after seeing the inside of the Duomo?

Thanks for any help!

I believe the €15 ticket is a combo of Duomo Museum, Baptistry, and dome climb. We saw the museum and baptistry -- both great -- but I don't do stairs so can't comment on dome climb or campanile view.

I have not climbed the Duomo - but it is on my bucket list.
One thing I would recommend is the fabulous view of Florence from across the river.
I'll attach a link below. We stopped there on our way out of Florence on my RS tour.
I can't tell you how many photos I took from this view point.

Great View of Florence and the Arno

Have not done it but like previous poster just the tower may have cheaper admission than 15 euros which is a ridiculous price

I did it last year with my 30 something son. Make sure you have advanced reservations as the line can be hours long. I enjoyed the view and the breeze after the hot climb. We were there mid June and it was very hot.

I think €15 for the combo ticket is quite fair, even a bargain, considering the Museum and Baptistery artwork.

The 15 euro ticket does indeed cover admission to all the separate sections of the duomo complex: belltower, baptistry, dome (cupola), museum, crypt and cathedral, although the cathedral itself is free. The baptistry ALONE is worth that ticket price, and the museum (which was under reconstruction when we were there) is supposed to be excellent.

While the ticket covers the dome, timed-entry reservations are mandatory for that one. You may do that on the website at the same time you pre-purchase your ticket:

https://www.museumflorence.com

Some tourists who haven't been able to land an opening for the dome have substituted a climb of the Bell Tower instead for the view over the rooftops of Florence: you may make timed-entry reservations for that one as well or take your chances when you get there.

To my knowledge there isn't a lower-priced ticket JUST for the dome. IMHO, the interior of duomo isn't nearly as interesting as the exterior or some other sections of the complex. If you purchase the tickets, it's well worth the time to take a look at some of those.

Follow-up -- if you do NOT want to climb, there was a €12 ticket that was just museum and baptistry. Amazing artworks!! Original baptistry doors are in the museum, copies are on the outside of the baptistry (free to view)

I have climbed both the Duomo and the Bell Tower. I prefer the Bell Tower as you get a great view of the Duomo from it. Also, climbing the Bell Tower was easier.

Ah but if you've read Brunelleschi's Dome by Ross King you have to climb the dome and see it brick by brick and the tools left behind, fascinating!

I haven't done the dome climb to be able to compare, but we chose to do the tower at the Palazzo Vecchio instead so we could have a view that included the dome. It was lovely, and we got there when it opened and it wasn't crowded at all.

We just were there and did both climbs. The €15 ticket covers all 4 sights--best deal in Florence!--and you have 48 hours to use it in all places, from the time you enter the first sight, so you don't have to do both climbs on the same day. But you must have reservations for the dome climb.

Bell tower is an easier climb, yes, but the dome is amazing. You walk in between the layers of the dome that was engineered and constructed 500 years ago!

I purchased the combo ticket when I was in Florence eight months ago and thought it was an excellent value. I actually did not make it into the cathedral itself other than climbing the dome, because I lost track of time on my last day (and also missed the crypt). It was o.k. I has visited both on a previous trip. Duomo climb, baptistery, and museum were easily worth the 15 Euros.

Looks like they've changed the tour options since I was there last 5+ years ago. I did a guided tour where we were able to walk along the roof-top terraces (very nice view), along the narrow catwalks on the front of the cathedral both outside and inside right above the entrance (vertigo inducing for some on the tour), around the Dome right above the sanctuary/alter (more vertigo, girl freaked out and clung to the walls), inside the Dome workshop and finally up to the cupola. I understand that we got to the top using one entrance, while the tour that just went to the cupola utilized a different entrance. Since you're there, go for the full package. The view is as high as one can get, keep in mind Florence sits along a riverbank with a few surrounding hills on a wide river plain so, you're not see spectacular mountains but, you're perched as high as you can be.

IMHO, the interior of duomo isn't nearly as interesting as the
exterior or some other sections of the complex.

I should clarify this comment I'd made previously as it didn't apply to the DOME but to the main body of the basilica. Entirely worth doing, of course, but different than my experience with many other Italian churches. The exterior, however, is mind-blowing, and shoots particularly well at night when illuminated.
