Florence dome climb--dress code?

Forum friends help--do we have to be in compliance with Duomo dress code to climb the dome?

Walking type shorts and any shirt. I would still keep the shoulders and knees covered. T- Shirt is okay. Jeans can be heavy. Anything you can safely climb steps in. Good tip above about comfortable shoes. Hiking type sandals with heavy straps and support will work also.

I'd comply with the dress code, because I'm probably gonna stop in the church at the same time.

The only thing I would consider is if I were female, I would opt for pants over a skirt, but in general, as others have stated, respect the knees and shoulders covered protocol.

The dome is inside the church, so stay with the dress code.

Having read dozens of posts about this, I don't understand why the dress code for churches is such a problem; one dresses appropriately for work or the beach, why not wear what's appropriate for a church?

Thanks everyone!

We were ready for the dress code to climb the dome but didn't need to be. Yes you pass through a 20 foot section of the church but that's it. They were not enforcing the dress code for anyone in that line.

However, if you want to combine your activities and go into the church on the same trip then be prepared!

Also FYI reservations are mandatory to climb the dome. (RS latest book says you can't get them.) And when we were there they sold out every day so plan ahead. The dome climb is awesome!

Good choice -- I'd follow the church's dress code... you are technically in the church for a small part. You get to look down and out on the interior/center of the church on your way up to to the cupola. And you may want to stop into the church afterward to see how high you were up in the dome!
And I agree with pants for women... there are a lot of stairs and people will be RIGHT behind you. They don't need the extra scenery :)
