Florence Day Trip from Rome

My husband and in-laws are planning a day trip from Rome to Florence on a Saturday (since most things are closed on Mondays). We plan on taking the EuroStar train departing at 755am and arriving in Florence around 930am then straight to the Accademia.

My question is, will we be able to do both the Uffizi and Accademia in the same day with some time left over to do some shopping at San Lorenzo or Ponte Vecchio?

Also, should we take the 752pm or 852pm train back to Rome?

I'm in charge of the planning so I am just trying to please everyone :)

Thanks so much!!!!

If you make reservations in advance for the Uffizi and Accademia, absolutely. You don't say what time of year you are going, but the thing that is going to trip you up the most is crowds/lines. Reserve in advance and this headache goes away. You might even have time to visit the Duomo or S. Maria Novella (near the train station), both of which are well worthwhile.

Make sure you bring a good map and I would suggest a compass. Florence is small but it is easy to get turned around and you don't have time to spare.

The train back home depends on several factors: how early do you need to be up the following day? Do you need public transportation back to your hotel in Rome or can you walk? Are you just going to do the Uffizi, Accademia, shopping and take off, or are you going to have dinner in Florence?

I believe when we did our daytrip in December, we had the later 8:52pm train back to Rome. The train ended up being almost half an hour late in arriving, so it was quite late by the time we got back to the hotel. Fortunately the metro was still running.

If you would like more details of the daytrip we did, send me a PM.

Tracey,

We often make the "day trip" to Firenze from Roma and catch the LAST train back! That's because we always try and catch the 7:30 seating for dinner at Il Latini, one of our favorite restaurants!

I think Liz gives great advice. We currently live out on the Cassia so we just catch a taxi home from in front of Termini (close to midnight at return) and avoid all public transportation. After a day like that, you just want to get to your room and crash!

Follow the suggestions by Liz; we've taken friends and done one museum in the AM, the other in the afternoon and had no issues! Plenty of time to shop and do some "cafe' time" in between! Just make sure you've "pre-bought" your tickets as you will not have time to wait in line!

Ciao,
Ron

Thanks for your help!! I think we are going to take your advice, Ron and take the 952pm back and try to catch dinner at Il Latini.

Ron or anyone else, do you know a great little place for lunch in Florence that won't break the bank :) I plan on doing that shopping hehe!!

We've eaten lunch a few times at Trattoria Sostanza. It's open for lunch Mon-Fri noon-2:15pm. The address is Via Porcellana 25r, located near the Borgo Ognissanti end, Near Santa Maria Novella.

The phone number is +39 055-212-691. They DO NOT accept credit cards but courses are fairly reasonable: Primi 6.20€ - 7.20€; secondi 7€-18€. Note they are closed (like many places) the entire month of August! Sostanza is also called Il Troia (the trough) by locals - The food is GREAT!

If you're there for dinner, head to Il Latini for a great experience - reservations required AND you then have to go stand in line! You could make the 7:30 seating (Be in line by 7 PM though - and HOLD YOUR SPOT!)

Il Latini is open Tues-Sun 12:30-2:30pm and 7:30-10:30pm. It's located at Via del Palchetti 6r which sometimes is a little hard to find! It's off Via della Vigna Nuova, Near Piazza Santa Trínita. The phone number there is +39 055-210-916. They DO take credit cards. They are closed 15 days in Aug and Dec 24-Jan 6!

Ron
