Florence day trip

It was suggested to take the early train to Pisa and stay a few hours then continue on to Lucca before heading back to Florence. I'm unsure but would you think this is a bit much?

It is doable but frankly, Pisa may not take that much time. Lucca might take a bunch of your day.

Agreed. Lucca is worth a full day if not more.

I'll see how important the tower is our 13 and 16 yr grandkids...other wise do you feel Lucca would be enjoyable? As always thanks for any input

Lucca is a lovely old town. Perhaps they would enjoy a bike ride around its city walls. Or a tour of the underground below the walls. You can also climb the 230 stairs of the Torre Gunigi.

You could do this with an early start but it would be rushed. According to Rome2Rio you would spend over three hours on the train. I was not that impressed with Pisa outside of the iconic tower and related structures.

I've done this and it's not rushed or too much. I saw the Field of Miracles in the morning, was in Lucca in time for lunch, had an enjoyable afternoon exploring Lucca and was back in Florence in time for dinner. It's a great day trip from Florence.

It's a short train ride from Pisa to Lucca, but I believe there's also now bus service from very near the Field of Miracles to Lucca. Details might be explained in Rick's guidebook. If you take the bus to Lucca, I'd suggest walking from the Pisa train station to the Field of Miracles using the route suggested in the guidebook. The walk takes about 30 minutes and is quite interesting after you cross the river.

I did this, but in reverse, in 1989. It remains one of my best travel days ever.

I started by taking a bus from Florence to Lucca, which in 1989 was very un-visited (no idea now). I biked a few times atop the wall around the city, as well as walking around the city itself. Lucca is very nice and highly worth seeing (Rick's book should have details of where to rent bikes for riding atop the wall, but you can also walk atop it if you wish).

I then took a bus to Pisa, then walked through town to the Field of Miracles (where the Leaning Tower is just one of several impressive structures). Pisa, of course, is not un-visited. But getting there in the late afternoon, the tour buses were leaving, the souvenir vendors were literally packing up, and the marble in the Field of Miracles looked lovely in the afternoon light. I then took the train back to Florence.

So, not only is it not too much, but I highly recommend it.

IWe're definitely going to do both, I'm thinking Lucca first is the way to go. It will be late June so maybe we can beat the heat and ride the bikes
Thanks for the help everyone!

Doing Lucca first enables you to visit Pisa after the crowds have mostly departed.
