Florence day trip

We have a one day stop on our cruise itinerary in Pisa and were thinking of taking a day trip to Florence. We would like to explore the city on our own without having to book a tour through the cruise line (which seem to be expensive). We know that it is about a 2 hour trip one way. Any ideas on the most efficient and timely way to get there?

Well, if you going from Pisa to Florence the train only takes an hour or so. You can buy tickets in Pisa for your trip to and from Florence. It's a regional train so don't forget to validate your tickets before boarding. The cost of the train ticket is just over 7 euros each. Take a good guide book along with you so you can easily get around Florence. Make a list of your "must sees" before the trip so you know what you want to see and don't waste time on other less important sites. Donna

If you want to see the uffizi or academia get reservations so you don't waste time if you are only there for the day

The train is easy and frequent. Check trenitalia.it for times. Before you get on the train (going and returning) you MUST validate your ticket. You'll see other people doing it. If you don't, there's a big fine. The train station is right in the heart of Florence, so it's not far (5-10 minute walk) to the parts you'll most likely want to see.
