I am looking at doing a day trip out of Florence to Sienna in late-November. There are a number of companies that offer this tour and I was wondering if anyone had any experiences to share. Many thanks.
Most people on this site are do-it-yourselfers, which may explain why you're not getting a lot of replies. Transportation Florence to Sienna is easy and economical by bus, some do it by train. Guided tours must be worth the extra money to some, but one question is how many people do you have (tour cost x # of persons) and do you really not want to buy a $20 guidebook and plan your own day trip in Sienna. Of course, planning your own day trip isn't just the $20 guidebook, it's the time to do the research. Some of us think that the research time is half the fun.
I have taken a day trip from Florence to Siena both by car and by train. I highly recommend taking the train because you save the hassle of following driving directions out of Florence and back. I would take the train, go to the piazza in Siena, have coffee or lunch and then walk around. You can search online for sights, get a city map from the tourist information office or bring a map from a guidebook. As for a tour, sorry but I haven't taken one in Siena. Good luck!

you don't need a tour company if you do some homework yourself. the bus station in florence is a short walk from the train station. bus drops you right outside sienna. sienna is pretty compact you can't get lost by yourself.
If you want to have a day in Sienna there's no need to take a tour. The bus station in Florence is over the road from the train station (Santa Maria Novella) and will get you to Sienna in about an hour and a quarter depending on traffic. From there you will have the entire day to do as you choose; and moreover not have to keep up to the schedule of a tour guide and waiting bus. If you had time I would recommend a day out from the crowds in Florence and Sienna by taking a day in the country. My pick would be the Slow day in Tuscany http://www.slow-days.com but there are other tours which do a similar sort of thing.
