Florence--Climbing Giotto's Bell Tower (Campanile)

I've decided against climbing the duomo since I'm claustrophobic. However, I'm wondering if the bell tower might be an option for me. How tight/cramped are the steps? Is it one-way up and one-way down?

The tower would be a great option. I don't remember how tight the steps are, but at different levels there are "open areas" where you can take a breather, look out at the view, and even sit down if you want to.

I don't remember if the up and down is one way or not.

The stairs are two way. We did this instead of the Duomo because there was no line for the Campanile, and I think the view was "almost" as good.

If I remember correctly it is a little tight in a few places, but there are many stops on the way up with plenty of space.

definitely do the bell tower rather than the duomo!!! only a scant bit lower (but still a climb!) but really... when you are that high up, the difference is lost in the scope.

as posted, there are many places along the way to stop, catch a breeze in a WIDE open air level to take in a view... be careful tho on the hour as we were at the level right below the bells and they started right over head!!! wow! i recorded it on my cellphone and use it now as a ringtone.

no lines at the entry (amazing when you see the line next door for the dome).. just pay your 6-7 euro and hoof it up. some narrow passages and still humid air but not bad at all.

another plus is at the top, you get your pictures of the florence rooftops AND the dome... an interesting point on your prints of the tiny figures to give perspective. have fun on your cardio workouts!
