Florence is small enough that most visitors simply walk to everything. Last week we stayed at Fiesole, a suburb 20 minutes bus ride from city center. It's quiet and less expensive lodging. The bus costs 1.2 euro good for 60 minutes. Buy them at tabacchi shops before boarding. You can get 10 for 10 euro. We also took the bus around to see outside of the tourist area and to Piazzale Michelangelo.
