After climbing the dome, do you exit into the cathedral? We have tickets for the dome for Friday afternoon but afternoon lines for free entry to the cathedral are LONG. We are wondering if we should try to get in first thing in the morning.

No they are separate but you do look down into the church at the 1st stop where you admire the ceiling up close.
