Florence Car Rental - ZTL?

I took Rick Steves' advice and arranged to pick up my rental car in Florence near the SMN Train Station. I plan to pick up the car on my way out of town and drive to Siena. But Hertz is in the ZTL. How do I get out of town without paying the fine?

We took a train between Florence and Siena. A friend took a bus. You don’t need to rent a car if just going between the two places.

I’m assuming you aren’t just using the car to get to Siena as the above poster seems to assume? Maybe doing greater Tuscany? Could you arrange instead to pick up out at the lots at the airport? That’s what we did. It was a simple relatively inexpensive 20 minute taxi drive early in the morning to get out there for our 8 am pick up. And then you avoid the ZTL entirely. The Florence to Siena drive is a pretty easy straight shot as long as you aren’t planning to drive through the gates. Beware of the ZTL there too. Otherwise, if you don’t want to change pick up location for Florence, perhaps talk directly to that Hertz office about the route you need to take?

First of all, the cameras only care if you are driving into a ZTL, not out. Secondly, Google Maps now shows the ZTL’s in Florence. Lastly, if you look for the route from SMN to Sienna on the app, it leads you out of the Zone and around the city to avoid entering one. Haven’t noticed the Zones being highlighted in any other cites. Hopefully they will be in the future, but I think Florence has the most complaints.

We rented our car at the Hertz location on Via del Sansovino...taxied from our hotel. It was very easy to reach the SR222 (Via Chiantigiana) from there. Google maps worked well everywhere from Firenze through Tuscany and Umbria, but the best advice came from the gentleman at Hertz, who said, “Just follow the blue signs pointing to Siena.” Worked like a charm.

Your Hertz car will have a permit to drive in and out of the ZTL when you pick-up and drop-off the car; you just can't keep driving within, or in and out of the ZTL during your rental period.

Ok. Thanks for all the good information. We plan to take the train from Venice to Florence - and then drive from Florence to Siena, to Montalcino, and then to Rome and drop off the car at the airport. Our hotel in Florence is about a 45 minute bus ride to the Hertz agency at the airport but only a 17 minute walk to the location on Via Borgo Ognissanti. So that's where I wanted to pick it up. Yes - I did see the ZTLs on Google maps. But I was curious about navigating out of town. All this information was very helpful. Thank you.

Borgo Ognissanti is a one way road, keep on driving straight without making any turn till you are out of the center and you won't re-enter the ZTL.

I doubt the rental agencies can provide a ZTL pass when you have an easy way to avoid driving under the cameras.

I did exactly what you are trying to do ; was fairly easy.

The Hertz and EuropCar offices are in a ZTL already ; you can get a ticket for entering one not exiting one.
As mentioned above me, it is one way road ; you drive straight until the road ends ; it ends where the highway around the city is and at that point you are no longer in a ZTL

Barring an odd turn you make by mistake you have no ZTL fears picking up the car and driving to Siena from this location.
In Siena the ZTL zones are easier just don't drive past/into the very obvious city walls.

Returning to that same Florence location is trickier though ; and I believe the return garage is a different address than the main office where you pickup for this reason.

i.e... once you exit that ZTL it is in don't re-enter it.

Ok. I plan to spend a week driving the car south from Florence. When I get to Rome, I'll drop it at FCO and then take the train into the city. I won't be returning it to Florence. Thank you.

We have rented from the Hertz site that you are using 3 different trips. Each time the office had maps on how to get out of the city and marked the best route to our next destination.
