Florence bus travel

Has anyone recently rode on the ATAF Florence city bus to Fiesole - Number 7? I had read that there is a problem with theft/pick pockets on this particular bus line. Is that true? Being a woman, I carry a purse. Plus,I'm an avid photographer and carry a digital SLR with a zoom lens, everywhere I go.

I read Florence's newspapers on line regularly (daily) and I have never read anything about that. That doesnt mean that pick pockets on buses don't happen. As a matter of fact crowded buses are the perfect environment for pick pockets. However I haven't read about particular concerns with the number 7. In any case you should be aware of pick pockets in any crowded situation.

We rode the bus last September, not a problem, didn't even think about that! Lots of college kids on the bus, since Fiesole is a college town. I had my DSLR camera with me, great views of Florence from there (but as always, dirty air over Florence) Just use the normal caution and you should be OK. Pickpockets are more interested in your money/cash than cameras. Keep your camera on your lap with the strap secured and you should be fine!

We were in Florence for 2 months and rode that bus at least once a week because it's one of our favorite routes. Never had a single problem at the stop, along the way, or in Fiesole itself. And we're women, who also occasionally rode that bus solo when a fellow traveller wasn't around. So take your usual precautions, but nothing to be paranoid about. P.S. - if you are into scenic bus rides, try bus 25 (also departing from San Marco). Takes you up into the hillside across from Fiesole to an awesome piazza at the top of a hill. Loved it and perfect photo opp!

Connie, As Roberto mentioned, you'll have to be aware of pickpockets anywhere on crowded public transit. I'm sure the #7 Bus in Florence is no worse than the infamous #64 Bus in Rome. I've ridden that one on numerous occasions, also while hauling a large dSLR, and so far no problems. As I recall, one of the hop on / hop off Red Buses also goes to Fiesole, although I'm sure it will be more expensive than the #7 Bus. With reference to the comments that Ellen made about the air quality, be sure to pack along a Circ. Polarizer as it may help a bit. Happy travels!
