You can use this website to plan your bus trip in Florence.

Click on the top right for English. There's a route planner tool (but make sure you are using the right departure time) and route maps once you know the bus number which shows all the stops on the route.

Within the city center, if you don't like to walk, the only option is the 'bussino" ( the little mini bus). The closest via lupi is the C1.
At least you will be safe, the Questura (police headquarters) is right there on via Zara..

www.reidsitaly.com has an interesting site map that shows all the bus stops around the SMN station. Scroll down to a green Florence hyperlink and click on Plan, then scroll down to getting around Florence by bus.

The map shows where to board the bus you want to take. Each bus stop also has a sign listing all stops. At times I found these signs to point to general direction of travel. The bus that picked me up may not return me to that place even though the sign says it goes there, and no driver could explain why the bus did not go there.

I would get pointed to take a different bus on the other side of SMN that did not even list my stop on the sign. I would get instructed to get off early and walk to my stop.

I used Reid's bus map to locate where to board the buses.

I found the ATAF map of the "bussini" (electric minibuses). They are the only ones going around the city enter nowadays since they closed the Duomo area to traffic. Not all streets are shown but via Lupi is up almost neat piazza della Liberta' (the map erroneously calls it via Salvestrina, which is the same street but it changes name after via San Gallo) Your minibus is the C1 (light blue).
