Florence areas to stay with car parking

My June itinerary currently is Positano 5 nights (4 days), Rome 5 nights, Tuscany 7 nights, Venice 3 nights and Varenna (Lake Como) 2 nights.

The Tuscany portion which has 7 nights is divided as:

  • Pienza: 2 nights (pick up car in Rome, free parking available on-site)
  • San Gimignano: 2 nights (free parking available on-site)
  • Florence: 3 nights (drop off rental car before the stay begins)

I am realizing that rental car charges are almost the same whether I book for 2 days, 4 days (as per current plan) or 7-8 days. Also since it is 4 of us (family with 2 older teenagers), instead of dropping off the car while arriving in Florence, it would probably be extremely convenient to just continue using the rental car for the Florence to Venice journey. However, for this to make sense, we need to have a free parking at the hotel / apartment we stay in Florence and probably stay a bit outside the Florence city center. Overall it may cost us slightly more but perhaps it may be a bit more convenient than the train.

Is there a neighborhood in Florence or just outside Florence you can recommend which could satisfy the criteria? Outside Florence, Fiesole seems interesting as it has nice views of Florence.

I have tentatively booked a hotel in Fiesole (Pensione Bencistà) which seems to have a high rating and great views of Florence. The idea is that the night of arrival, we can leave San Gimignano, visit Pisa (check out the leaning tower) and arrive late afternoon in Fiesole - enjoy the sunset from the hotel and have an early night. The next day, we visit Florence. It will take us 25-30 minutes one way. The following day, if we want we can come back to Florence or just relax in Fiesole.

We are less interested in museums than walking in the city for view points (Piazzale Michelangelo, Ponte Vecchio, etc.) and just enjoying walking around. My main interests are photographing the city scapes.

Is Fiesole a good choice? Are there any other neighborhoods which could fit the criteria (possible to park the car and be near enough to the city - maybe even more near than Fiesole).

Of course, the other option is continue with the current plan (drop off the rental car on entering Florence) and staying in Florence city center (I have not canceled my existing reservation).

Fiesole is lovely, but for a first-time visit I would prefer central Florence.
Also, I wouldn't describe the drive from Florence to Venice as "convenient"; there is a lot of traffic on those highways and there is something to be said for the experience of stepping off the train at Santa Lucia station and finding yourself on the Grand Canal!

No. Keeping the car in Florence just to drive to Venice at the end of your stay will make no sense, even if there is no variance in rental cost (which seems strange). The parking fees in Florence are at least 25 euro a day, and hotels (assuming they provide parking) charge too. So you are better off returning the car as soon as you arrive in Florence and then take the high speed train to Venice, which is faster (2 hours) and more convenient. The 3.5 hour drive to Venice is also very boring with no beautiful views to enjoy.. If you are certain of your travel plans you can buy the train tickets in advance at the Economy or Super Economy fare, which can save you up to 45% of the price. Those discounted fares don’t allow changes or cancellations (they are not refundable) but if you are certain of your travel plans they are a good deal. Two train companies to consider:

Thanks Roberto and Mona. I have decided to arrange my journey with destinations not requiring a car - so I will be staying in Florence city center as per my original plan - and not keeping the car while in Florence.

Yes - the rental car market seems bonkers. Essentially they are charging the weekly rental fees even for 2 day rentals.

The travel plans are more or less finalized except I may not want to commit just in case there are Covid related changes / restrictions added. Is it possible to wait till last few days and get the train tickets for the high speed trains or advance reservations are recommended. The journeys I am thinking of needing high speed trains are Naples to Rome, Rome to Florence, Florence to Venice and Venice to Milan. Actually is Naples to Rome on a high speed train?

I’ll be staying in a villa near San Casciano in Val do Pesa. Do city markets (grocery stores) have free parking? We’re hoping to grab food to make breakfast and a dinner in the villa
