We are thinking of staying in at a farmhouse 3KM north of Florence -it is close to public transportation and we won't have a car. We will spend some time in Florence. Any other thoughts on nice day trips from Florence that don't require a car? We have two kids ages 9 and 12.
Siena is a great town and a short train and bus ride away. I think your kids would like it - it's like walking through a maze! Other day trips you might look at Assisi or Pisa.
Julie,
We booked a day trip to Siena and San Gimignano through Expedia.com. It was wonderful. You pick the bus up right near the train station in Florence. It cost a little over $70.00 and well worth it.
We did the Grayline tour from Florence to San Gimingiano and Siena. Sounds very similar to the above. It was a very nice tour that included a tour in Siena. Grayline in Florence is run by CAF tours. The ticket office is about 200 feet from the Grand Hotel Baglioni and, as mentioned above, you catch the bus one block away from the main train station.
A bit longer by train into Umbria and really an all day tour is Assisi. We were there one full day and could have stayed another (and should have). It's one of Italy's stunning hill towns.
The others are spot on. I did a Siena/SG day tour and it was great. I would have liked longer in Siena but at least I saw enough to put it on my list to go back to. Also went to Pisa - think you have to see the tower although I thought the Cathedral was better. I think you will find quite a lot to do out of Florence as it is such a major hub.
