HI,
As of now we are spending 4 night in Florence(3.5 days) and 4 nights in Rome (last day is traveling home). I need help deciding if we spend a night in Siena on are way to Rome. (we are taking the train). I know we plan on going on a wine tasting tour and want do a cooking class in wine country. We were planning on doing a day trip for that.
Would love some ideas!
You should visit Siena from Florence on a day trip. They are close (75 min by bus, 90 min by train) and to go from Siena to Rome the fastest way is actually backtracking to Florence to catch the high speed trains there.
Changing hotels is time consuming anyhow. In the time you need checking in and out, and packing/unpacking, you can go to Siena and back.
I am sure that Siena would make a nice overnight trip BUT it is also very adequate for a day trip. Given you schedule I would agree with the above recommendation.
Florence is renown for Renaissance painting, sculpture, and architecture. If you love it, you might even begrudge a day away for a jaunt to lovely Sienna. If you don't want to immerse yourselves in it, then you might be happier spending most of your time in Siena. You can see Florence's highlights in one busy day.
