Florence and Lucca

I’m excited about introducing my sister to Tuscany in March. We’re thinking about spending several days each in Florence and then Lucca. (My husband and I have been to Italy a number of times, but my sister has not … and Tuscany is #1 on her bucket list.)

Can anyone recommend hotels or apartments they’ve enjoyed in either of those cities? We want to spend no more than $200 a night if possible. Oh and we’ll be traveling by train, if that makes a difference.
Anyone heard of Hotel Davanzati near Uffizi?

I’m also thinking of a wine tour from Florence and cooking class in Lucca? Thoughts on that?

Thanks!

Feeling lazy, so I just copied what I wrote 4 years ago in reply to a similar question:

We loved our 5 weeks in an apartment on Borgo la Croce near Piazza Beccaria. Pedestrian-only street lined with coffee bars, restaurants, and regular stores like hardware stores. Just inside the old city walls. Quiet.

A couple minutes walk west to the Sant' Ambrogio market and a couple minutes walk east to a pretty large and good supermarket. One minute walk to the bus stop for the little electric buses that can take you almost everywhere in the historic district. One and a half minute walk to what, after much testing, we thought was the best gelato in Florence, Gelateria De' Medici. About 15 minutes walk to the Duomo.

The helpful and English-speaking airbnb superhost has two apartments in the same building, one on the top floor, Le Rose Siberine (ours) and one on the floor above street-level, Le Rose di Leonardo. She lives in the building, too. We would stay in either very happily.

We have also stayed in the Oltrarno for a week and enjoyed that, too, but it was considerably busier and noisier. Of course, it depends on the exact apartment you choose. If we stayed across the river again, we'd probably stay in the San Frediano neighborhood because several of our favorite places to eat were there and it would be near the British Institute where I like to take history of art classes.

Well darn. Both units look great, but both seem to be booked already.

We stayed at La Romea B&B in Lucca based on RS's suggestion. It was wonderful. Great location. Gaia provided wonderful breakfasts and very helpful recommendations for restaurants and things to do. Our best meal on that trip was at her suggestion. We rented an apartment in Florence, but it is no longer available to rent.

We stayed at La Bohème B&B for 3 nights and it was charming and as pretty as advertised.

We were in Florence for 5 nights after small towns so I decided to rent a larger place and we stayed in Relais & Maison Grand Tour
and it was very nice. The host is super involved, laundry and little cafe down the block, as well as good main bus stops, walking distance to the big sites and a few minutes from the Mercato.

I recommend both, have a great trip,
