My friend and I are flying into Florence on April 3 and need to get to Siena. In doing research it seems like there is a bus that runs about every half hour from the airport to the bus station in Florence where we could then get a bus to Siena. Other suggestions?
Private driver service ,or a rental car.
I don’t know if they have that bus nowadays since they opened the light rail trolley from the airport to,the station (the bus station is near the train station). You can also take a taxi to the bus station. There are also trains going to Siena, although the train may not be as convenient as the bus since the Siena train station is outside the city center at the bottom of the hill and you’d likely need a taxi to the city center (although there are escalators from the station). The train also takes 15 minutes longer than the bus, and you must carry your own luggage aboard (with the bus the suitcases go in the luggage hold in the belly of the bus).
Suki’s suggestion to hire a private driver would be a convenient albeit very expensive option that would probably set you back at least 200€.
Renting a car is something to be considered if you plan to rent a car while in Siena for your exploring needs in the Siena Province countryside and villages.
We have done both of what Suki and Roberto have recommended. The trolly from the airport followed by the bus is the least expensive option, but it is more time consuming. If you go with that option, it will take between 2 to 3 hours (at least) from your arrival time in Florence until your arrival in Siena. The last two years we have used a private driver. The cost was 150 euros (cash) or 170 euros (credit card). Travel time is approximately one hour fifteen minutes to an hour and a half from airport to our Siena apartment. After overnight travel from Florida to Florence the comfort and peace of mind of the private driver is our winning option.
Thanks for your replies. Any recommendations for a private driver?
Our property manager made arrangements for our transfer to Siena, so I do not have the names. I would suggest you contact the place where you will be staying and see who they would recommend. I also see you are taking the tour by Roberto so they might have a recommendation.
