It seems as if the Volainbus from the Florence airport to Florence city center is suspended until 31 Dec 2022. So the best inexpensive option seems to be the T2 tram line.

As long as the tram is working, I do not foresee the bus ever returning. Even medium distance bus lines (say, like the ones to Siena and S. Gimignano) are going to be moved to more peripheral starting points to keep traffic out the centre of Florence.

The tram is very easy. It's a short walk from the terminal, buy a ticket at the machine and hop on the next tram. Where you get off depends on where you're going. The SMN train station is the penultimate stop, Unita is the last, nearer the Duomo.
