Florence Airport

We have a 8:30 a.m. flight out of Florence to Munich. Is two hours prior to departure enough time to allow?

Should be at that time. It is considered a domestic flight and the Florence Airport is relative easy to handle.

paula, Two hours should be quite adequate, especially with an inter-E.U. flight. However, I'd check the information provided with your booking in case the airline has a different recommendation. The airport in Florence is only a short distance from the city, so getting to the airport won't take long. I'd probably ask the hotel to pre-arrange a Taxi the day prior to the trip, and that way there won't be any delays getting to the airport. Happy travels!

Our experience last September: Had an 8:30AM flight, got to the airport to check in at 6AM and the computers were down. The line to check in was LONG. People got pushy and rude (mostly US citizens) (we were ALL checking in for the same flight) and started to cut line to get to the front. This was a Lufthansa flight. They ended up holding the flight until everyone could get checked in/ check bags. Security was normal slow as you had to wait for the screening and they were pulling some bags aside to open and check them. Talk about stressful.... That being said, 2-2.5 hours should be good, but keep in mind you could get to the airport and run into a situation like we did, so be prepared.

Two hours? I've never gotten to the Vespucci airport earlier than 75 min prior, whether it was to Frankfurt or Munich (I nearly always fly Lufthansa out of Florence). I don't think that Ellen's experience of the computer being down is a likely occurrence. Once I was at CDG in Paris and they closed the entire airport because the bomb squad had to detonate an unattended bag. Anything can happen, even that Space Aliens land at the Florence airport, but I don't make preparations for events that have a very slim chance of occurring, otherwise you'll stress over anything. I can tell you that over 20 years using the FLR airport, one hour has been more than sufficient for me. The airport terminal in Florence is small, even after the recent expansion (still in progress). The check in is on the second floor of the new building (taller building), although the Departure sign is still on the lower building to the left. That side is now empty, if you enter there you'll have to walk to the right (facing the airport) to the new tower. The new check in hall has 40 counters. You'll be done checking in in 10 min. The security check will have a line, but it never takes more than 10-15 min to go through (shoes stay on your feet, to the chagrin of Janet Napolitano). This is the old terminal, as it looked before (it's still there, but it's mostly empty): http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Aeroporto_di_firenze_01.JPG This is the new tower where the check in now is, which is part of the new terminal: http://met.provincia.fi.it/fotobig.aspx?id=106869&idimage=16004 This is what the whole new terminal should look like after it's finished: http://europaconcorsi.com/projects/27295-Nuovo-Terminal-Per-L-aeroporto-Di-Firenze
