Florence Airport Car Rental

My wife and I are picking up and dropping off a rental car at the Airport in Florence in early Oct (I have read about lots of problems picking up or dropping off a rental in Florence and wanted to avoid this). We will immediately travel to a B&B near Gaiole in Chianti. Does anyone know how easy it is to access the main highway to the Chianti Region with a Hertz rental from the Florence Airport? Thanks much Steve

You can easily see the lay of the land on Mapquest or GoogleMaps.com. Do yourself a favor and make reservations thru AutoEurope.com cheaper than directly with the rental company. If you mark picking the car up at 53 Via del Sansovino, Florence, you'll be getting a Hertz car. It's just a 2 mile taxi ride from the train station. Picking up a car at any airport (in any country) comes with huge taxes and tariffs. Hertz will give you directions on how to get out of town without getting into any ZTL's. And in most cases, you can turn the car in at other Italian cities without any drop off charge. We dropped our car off in Orvieto on the way to Rome.
A Rental car is the only way to efficiently see Tuscany. Roads are well paved, often crooked but easily driven.

Don't pick up at the airport. You will pay more. You can return at any location, including airport but pick up at a city location. There is no problem exiting the city with a car. The problem is entering the city center not exiting.
If you rent from Europcar they have a car rental location at 2 via Forlanini, very close to the airport. They also have a location at Via del Gelsomino, which is the most convenient to get out of town and go to the Chianti. In this latter case, it's further from the airport. Hertz at via del Sansovino is also good from the airport.
