I will be travling from Florance to Montepluciano in October this year. I was wondering what the best way to get there is. We are not intrested in renting a car. SO I know the options are train and bus and I have seen many mixed reviews of both! we are staying at one of the hotels Rick Steves recommends in montepluciano

I used the bus from Florence to Siena then to Montepulciano, worked perfect. Just get schedules so u can get last bus from Monte... to make it back to ZFlorence.

The fastest way is a train from FIRENZE (Florence) to CHIUSI-CHIANCIANO

Then from Chiusi station there are several buses driving you up the hill to Montepulciano. Below is the weekday (Mon-Sat) schedule. Try not to go on Sundays as bus service is limited.

Having said that, a car would be very useful and efficient to visit the countryside and nearby small towns like Pienza, Monticchiello, Montalcino, etc. therefore consider renting one to maximize your time there.

I would recommend a car. There is so much to see and you are really limiting yourself. I really enjoyed our driving through the area and stopping in unexpected places.
