Been to Venice many times but never in mid-October. After making plans, it just occurred to us that this is the time of year Venice has the greatest potential for flooding. Our apartment is near the train station. Would you avoid Venice at this time of year? It's not too late to cancel yet. Are we over thinking this or is it a real issue to be concerned with?
I would not cancel. Sure, there may be a bit of acqua alta, but remember it is tidal. If it is a hassle, you can buy knee high plastic overboots for about 10 euro.
A couple of apps that are handy. WVF (water on Venice floor) gives tides and places where you will get wet feet. And Chebateo, which boat, linking to the vaporetto timetables.
When we went (feb) we were keeping our fingers crossed that we would have an Aqua Alta, and we did! It was so beautiful walking tbrought the water at night, a highlight of our holiday. And the the only holiday were I have packed my wellies!!!!
Full moon is Oct 9 and new moon is Oct 25. One of the causes of the flooding is the extra gravitational force when the moon is new or full, so mid-October this year should not cause you undue alarm.
I was in Venice once during the acqua alta and the train station was okay, while other parts (including where I was staying in the Dorsoduro) were under water.
